SUNGLASS STANDARD EN1836/1997 to EN1836/2005
The new Standard comes into force on March 31 and will be valid for 5 years. It will be the official technical document applied by European Union Countries to check that sunglasses conform to the health and safety requirements laid down in The European Directive 89/686/EEC.
It is important to note that the standard EN1836:2005 is still currently only an EN and it "shall be given the status of a national standard by end of March 2006". This means that member states standards bodies have until end of March 2006 to make it a national standard, at which time any "conflicting national standard shall be withdrawn".
After that time, because sunglasses are classified as Class 1 PPE and are self certified under the CE Directive, it is the responsibility of the manufacturers/ suppliers to comply as soon as is practicable. Manufacturers and Suppliers should use up existing EN1836:1997 product labels during the rest of this season and plan to put new EN1836:2005 labels on their products for the next season, i.e. 2006/7.
Please download in the Website Member's Area a table showing the detailed comparison between EN1836:1997 and the new Standard EN1836:2005.
