Retail Selling Trends 2010 of sunglasses in France & Italy
During the meeting, Strategy with Vision (SWV) made a presentation on the size of the sunglass market in Europe, in volume and value, for 2009. First indications on the 2010 season were also presented. SWV started with a presentation of the 2009 data, which has already been covered in the press release on the Barcelona conference, which took place in June. To obtain first indications as to how the year 2010 has progressed, SWV carried out 350 visits to retail outlets selling sunglasses:
-
50 retail stores visited in May to early June. Five countries covered (D, E, F, I, GB)

Ø       - An update of 50 visits in Italy and 50 visits in France, in September

Ø       - Stocks were surveyed in each price point. In September, an additional consumer price
         point
of € 120+ was added

Ø       - Staff in the outlets were interviewed, as to sales in units made during the previous weeks

Ø       - Finally, the question was asked “Has 2010 been better, worse or the same as last year?”

France, at the beginning of the season, there was a polarisation between outlets reporting better than last year and worse than last year. By the end of the season, the tendency was to report that the year 2010 was about the same for sales of plano sunglasses, as in 2009. Of note was the trend for sales of sunglasses priced between € 50-€ 120, to have a balance between number of sunglasses displayed and number of sunglasses sold. In the price range over €120 for every two frames displayed, only one was sold.

Germany reported sunglass sales in line with 2009. Of note was the number of sunglass frames displayed in sunglass specialty outlets and sports outlets. These two forms of retailing were very successful in selling sunglasses, priced at € 50 and higher. Textile, boutiques, supermarkets, and drugstore outlets dominate the lower end of the market.

Italy started badly and finished well. About half of all retail outlets visited in May, reported worse sales than in 2009. By the end of the season, there was a switch to reporting the same or better. The figures tend to indicate that the season 2010 for sunglasses was about the same as in 2009.

Spain 2010 was very difficult. Industrial unrest, unemployment over 20%, as well as the impression that tourist numbers were down, all added up to poor sales of sunglasses. Out of the 50 retail outlets interviewed in Spain in May, 45 reported sales to be the same or worse than last year. SWV carried out some retail store checks amongst optical outlets in September, and this picture was confirmed. One leading retailer of sunglasses reported a sales increase of +2% for 2010; he felt that his outlets were an exception. Many opticians had stocks of branded sunglasses, which they were trying to sell off at discounts of 30%.

The UK probably did slightly better than last year. In the early part of the season, the majority of retailers were reporting sales in line with 2009. The rest of the summer probably profited from a slightly more optimistic mood and a slight improvement in the economy. Opticians performed well with a very good balance between the number of sunglasses displayed and the number sold.

SWV has been retained by ESA to carry out long-term longitudinal studies of the European sunglass market. For more information please contact the ESA office under office@esa-sunglasses.com
